'Stanczyk', by Polish artist Leon Wyczolkowski (1852-1934)
Stanczyk was a historical figure, a sixteenth-century court jester who often acted as the conscience of the king. This painting follows convention, depicting him as a tragic nationalist figure who despairs at the decline of Poland's military and political glory. The court are represented as szopka (puppets).
