Hilary 2001
During Hilary we're continuing to show Karekano
and Cowboy Bebop. We'll also finish off
Fushigi Yuugi Series 1. Unfortunately no one
likes Lodoss War :)
All the series we watch are from American or Japanese released
DVDs.
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo [starting Episode 9]
Director Hideaki Anno's first post-Evangelion anime, Karekano shows a
departure from Gainax's perceived territory of mecha anime. Set in a
modern day Japanese school it tells the story of Miyazawa Yukino and
Souchirou Arima, students entering the first year of high school.
A romantic comedy it differentiates itself from the competition with
genuinely amusing jokes which, I hasten to add, do not involve the
leads transforming into cats, pigs, chickens or anything else. The
animation style is also quite ... unusual, perhaps the best example of
Gainax's skill of combining style with budgetary considerations!
Cowboy Bebop [starting Episode 9]
There's only one word which can sum up CB. It's `cool'.
CB follows a group of interplanetary bounty hunters through their
adventures tracking wanted criminals across the galaxy. Great episodic
storylines and fabulous animation from Sunrise Studios made this the
biggest selling anime of 1998 in Japan.
Fushigi Yuugi [starting Episode 21ish]
Fushigi Yuugi follows a Tokyo schoolgirl, Miaka through the fantasy
world she accidently fell into whilst reading in the library. Classic
shoujo fantasy anime FY is perhaps unique in the degree to which it
can defuse a serious situation with some spontaneous insanity.
It's moderately difficult to sum up Fushigi Yuugi without any of my
personal bias, so I'm not going to try. Despite looking quite
interesting around episode 12, FY has continued to fall short of what
it could be and is meandering towards the end of its seemingly endless
first series. Tamahome has been captured and turned `bad'. Miaka still
has quite cottoned on to this. None of the other Suzaku 7 have had any
meaningful screentime for the last 6 or so episodes. The animation's
still terrible :)
Rurouni Kenshin OAVs
The Rurouni Kenshin TV series spanned over a hundred episodes of
moderately epic samurai shenanigans. The OAVs are set before the
series during Kenshin's childhood, training and career as an assassin.
Fantastic period Japanese visuals and a stirring score lend an
authentic feel to this short series.
Record of Lodoss War
Record of Lodoss War is a brilliant -omitted-.
