Michaelmas 2004 - Series

STOP PRESS! We've provided some trailers for some of this term's shows to give you a taster of what we're showing. In order to view them, you'll need the following programs:
  • Winzip to open them - get it here.
  • If the following terms mean nothing to you - DivX, XviD - then download ffdshow from here. Just click Next throughout the installation and ignore the technobabble if you want, this should set you up to watch them fine.

Note that the files are all around 25Mb in size, which will take roughly 15 minutes on a broadband connection or around 2 hours on dial-up.

Another note - in case you're wondering, we show all our anime in Japanese with English subtitles. Some of the trailers are dubbed (English voice overs) but this is not representative of the final product. Or something like that.

Fullmetal Alchemist - trailer here

Episodes 1-25(ish). The smash hit show of last year, it's already been snapped up for license and showing on American TV. Anyone who's been to Japan recently will be able to tell you about the terrifying quantities of FMA merchandise available. But what can we say? It's great!

Two brothers seek the Philosopher's Stone in a world where alchemy is not only a viable scientific proposition, but also a vital part of civil and military life. Surreal comedy, angst, shounen fight scenes and genuinely emotional plotlines rub shoulders in this mould-breaking show.

Card Captor Sakura - trailer here

Episodes 47-70 (Third Season). In many ways the best of the magical girl genre, a classic of comedy, cute and Clow Cards. Kinomoto Sakura was an ordinary (if cute and overly energetic) schoolgirl, adored by her best friend Tomoyo, teased by her older brother Touya, and entertaining an enormous crush on her brother's best friend, Yukito. Then she accidentally released the magical Clow Cards, and had to deal with Syaoran, the bad-tempered descendent of Clow Read (the creator of the cards), as well as capturing the cards before an unnamed disaster overtakes the world.

At last she's succeeded in capturing them all and becoming their new master. But life doesn't seem to be about to get any easier for her - particularly with the arrival of a mysterious transfer student... Take note: the horrendously dubbed and cut version aired on television as 'Cardcaptors' really doesn't bear much relation to the original show.

Galaxy Angel - trailer here

Episodes 1-6. Five girls of varying degrees of ineptitude and variously silly names attempt to save the galaxy! One of the sweeter and more random of shoujo sentai shows. My opinions of sweet shoujo make me refrain from commenting any further ^_^

And replacing it in 7th week:
Planetes

Episodes 1-12(ish). Combining diamond-hard near-future science fiction with a brillianly observed office comedy, Planetes follows the adventures of a group of astronauts who must recover or dispose of space debris. Looked down on as little more than space janitors, the members of the "Half" Section turn out to be much more than that.

Soukyuu no Fafner - trailer here

Episodes 1-6(ish).
"Are you there?"
It was a peaceful and calm island... the blue sky and the blue sea reach as far as one can see. For the adolescents living there, another ordinary day is about to begin.
"Are you there?"
Now an incomprehensible enemy has appeared. Their island home reveals the truth of its fortress nature, and without preparation or explanation they are hurled into battle with the mysterious foe.

Something of a Gundam-Evangelion hybrid, but with engaging characters, an intriguing plot and attractive artwork, who are we to complain?

And replacing it in 7th week:
Big O - trailer here

Episodes TBC. A mysterious occurrence known only as "The Event" has caused the residents of Paradigm City to lose their memories. Partially recovered, the city now falls under martial law, its citizens forever questioning what happened to them so long ago. Sworn to protect Paradigm City, his allies, and himself, Roger Smith, a self-styled "Negotiator" - along with his machine, The Big-O - seeks to unravel this mystery that haunts him like a faded memory. Just what connection do Roger and the Big O have with the city's past...?

Paranoia Agent - trailer here

Full series (13 episodes). A sudden crime outbreak has begun in Tokyo; the first assault victim's testimony is doubtful - she's suspected of having committed the crime herself. But soon afterwards, more victims appear and the situation changes. Each crime involves a young boy with a baseball bat, wearing golden rollerblades. Who is he? And who will be his next target? Dark, weird and twisty drama from the director of Perfect Blue.

Random Episode of the Week

A welcome return for the random ep slot sadly lost last year. We rather hope this is going to mean we don't have another term like the end of Trinity when every episode of every show seemed to be 'death, death, death, angst, death.' A showcase for new shows, old classics, favourite episodes, and even requests if you ask nicely.

Additionally:

Occasional themed weirdness, depending on the whims of the Committee.
