Meetings every Friday 8pm in the Harris Lecture Theatre, Oriel College.
Michaelmas 2005 - Series
Here's what we'll be starting off with this term for our regular meetings.
Please note that we show all our anime in Japanese with English subtitles, as opposed to dubbed in English.
Cowboy Bebop
The adventures of a bunch of misfit bounty hunters - the laidback Spike, paternal Jet, sexy Faye, crazy Ed and the cybernetic dog Ein - who live aboard the spaceship Bebop. A much-loved late 90's classic featuring great animation and the best-selling music of Yoko Kanno.
Melody of Oblivion
In a future where monsters have taken over the Earth after a massive, secret war against humanity, a young boy sets out with a sentient motorcycle and orgasmic (literally) archery skills to fight back and free the Melody of Oblivion from their clutches. A cult favourite from 2004 featuring some distinctly odd visual metaphor and the creepiest parrot in anime.
Slayers
Lina Inverse, one of the greatest (and shortest, and greediest, and...) sorceresses in all the land, and her band of unfortunate (and frequently unwilling) companions, adventure away merrily in this classic fantasy comedy based on a popular novel series that spawned two sequels and several film spin-offs.
Princess Tutu
Once upon a time there was a man who died whilst writing a fairy tale. Yet the fairy tale carried on without him, and in that fairy tale there was a girl, who was a princess, who was a duck... Surreal and captivating, Princess Tutu examines the nature of storytelling whilst throwing in ballet-dancing lobsters and a marriage-obsessed cat.
Gankutsuou
A futuristic re-telling of Alexander Dumas' classic novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", one of this year's biggest hits tells the story of a young noble, Albert de Morcerf, and the dramatic events that unfold after he meets the enigmatic Count during a holiday on the Moon. Labyrinthine melodrama and intoxicating visuals from the renowned Studio Gonzo.
Random Episode of the Week
Everyone likes randomness - every week we'll show an episode of something completely different. From campus comedy to moody horror, from detective thrillers to hardcore scifi, the mindboggling array of anime available gets showcased here.
Additionally:
Ghibli Night - to celebrate the recent release of Howl's Moving Castle, a special showing of some of Studio Ghibli's other classic films. Details TBC.
Other occasional themed weirdness, depending on the whims of the Committee.
