Scene Two

The Orchestra plays a highly strung orchestral version of SERAS IS TURNED while the scene changes back to the forest of before. Lights come up from various vehicles now on stage as INTEGRA exits a jeep to face stage front. She adjusts her cravat impatiently.

SONG: WAITING

(sung-spoken, like Rex Harrison in Dr. Doolittle or My Fair Lady. In 3 / 4. Lots of cello playing.)
INTEGRA:   WAITINGEBR> ALL THIS WAITINGEBR> WHAT MORE IS THERE TO ASK
THAT HE SHOULD PROMPTLY DO HIS JOB
BUT IM TAKING HIM TO TASK
BECAUSE HES KEEPING MEEBR>
WAITINGEBR> ENDLESS WAITINGEBR> FOR A FREAK, HES BEEN TOO LONG
AND I HAVE THINGS I NEED TO DO
I DOUBT ANYTHINGS GONE WRONG
BUT I REALLY CANT BE BOTHERED WITHEBR>
SO MUCH PAPERWORK, FILES TO FILL
RECRUITS TO INSTRUCT IN THEIR ENDLESS DRILL
KEEPING ME BUSY TIL HOURS SO LATE
WITH VAMPIRES THAT HE MUST EXTERMINATEEBR>
WAITINGEBR> WHY AM I WAITING?
IM THE ONE IN POWER
AND THIS REALLY IS TOO MUCH
ITS GONE PAST THE MIDNIGHT HOUR
AND I SHOULDNT BEEBR>
A brief musical interlude. INTEGRA paces round the stage, as she has done throughout, checking on the various SOLDIERS that have been exiting vehicles and transporting the bodies of GHOULS on the floor.
MY WORK IS MY LIFE, MY PRIDE AND JOY
SENDING HIM OUT TO SEARCH AND DESTROY
THIS HANGING AROUND IS DISGUSTING TO ME
SINCE THIS IS A PROTESTANT COUN-TE-RYYYYYYEBR>
(key change)
WAITINGEBR> I SHOULDNT BE WAITINGEBR> BUT HE LIVES BY HIS OWN RULES
TAKES SUCH PLEASURE IN THE FIGHT
BUT IM WORRIED BOUT HIS DUELS
GOD, I WISH I WERENTEBR>

ALUCARD enters, carrying a weakened SERAS. INTEGRA turns to face him, disapprovingly.

INTEGRA:   Where have you been, Alucard? And what is that?
ALUCARD:   I was kept busy for a moment. Hardly worth my time. Find me a better opponent in future.

ALUCARD lowers SERAS to the ground gruffly.

INTEGRA:   Ill ask you again. What. Is. THAT.
ALUCARD:   A police girl. She may be of some use to you, master. Oh, andE/TD>
BAD LUCK ABOUT BEING KEPT WAITING.

ALUCARD strides off, laughing madly as usual. SERAS makes to follow, but stops after a step and turns back to face INTEGRA.

SERAS:   Pleased to meet you, maam.
INTEGRA:   Sir. Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing.
SERAS:   UmmmEes, Sir. My name is Seras VictoE/TD>
INTEGRA:   Get in the truck. Ill have to think about what to do with you later.

SERAS smiles in an attempt to be civil, showing her new fangs, before she climbs into a truck. Shes pissed off.

INTEGRA:   THAT WAS WHY YOU KEPT ME HERE WAITING?

INTEGRA returns to the jeep. She looks disapprovingly at the corpse of a ghoul on the ground before climbing in. Lights out as the vehicles drive off.

SFX of cars pulling up in a driveway as the Orchestra plays ALUCARDS THEME for the scene change. A majestic set rises from the stage:

INT: Integras home. Palatial Ethink Norma Desmonds house in Sunset Boulevard, without the split stage effect or quite so much disturbing gothic architecture. Large stairs in the centre of the stage, arches, the usual.

WALTER enters from stage left, pushing a covered trolley. A towel is draped over his left arm. He pauses to check his pocket watch, smiling slightly, then placing it back in his shirt pocket.

Clipped footsteps signal the brusque arrival of INTEGRA from stage right, with SERAS following at a safe distance behind her.

WALTER:   Welcome home, Integra. I take it the job was a success?
INTEGRA:   In some ways. Think of something to do with this (jerks her thumb at SERAS) I have work to be doing, Walter.
WALTER:   Of course, Integra.

INTEGRA leaves by stage left without a backwards glance. SERAS sticks her tongue out petulantly after she leaves.

SERAS:   Whats her problem? She tolerates AluEI mean, Master, so why does she have a problem with me? I dont even like blood!
WALTER:   Oh, you will, young lady. You are a vampire now, dont forget. We shall provide what amenities you can as long as you help the Hellsing organisation.
SERAS:   The Hellsing organisation? Whats that?
WALTER:   We are dedicated to eradicating vampires from the Earth. We have been for many long years.
SERAS:   Isnt that hypocritical? I mean, youre employing vampires here!
WALTER:   Alucard is a special situation. Be grateful Integra has seen fit to treat you in a similar manner.
SERAS:   But she acts like she owns me!
WALTER:   Indeed. Well, Im afraid I must be going. Sir Integra requires her tea.
SERAS:   Geez, whys everyone so weird round here?
WALTER:   Im sorry, young lady, it must be difficult to adjust. Here, Ill help you get to grips with the basics.

SONG: TEA FOR SIR

(a waltz).
WALTER:   MY DEAR YOUNG POLICE GIRL, I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN
EVERYTHINGS HAPPENED SO FAST.
ATTACKED BY THE CLERGY NO LONGER ALIVE
YOURE THINKING THAT THIS STRAWS THE LAST.

IGNORED AND ILL-TREATED, TO WHILE OUT YOUR DAYS
SUCKING BLOOD AND OBEYING COMMANDS
BUT LIFE HERES NOT SO BAD, IM INCLINED TO BELIEVE
WITH A TROLLEY OF FOOD IN MY HANDSEBR>

WALTER whips the covering off the trolley. Its stacked with delicious afternoon tea items.
He begins to dance around SERAS with it.
