Michaelmas 2000

OAV is showing four main series this year on a single episode a week basis. The rest of the time during video evenings is taken up chatting and episodes of other series of interest to the members.

Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo [starting Episode 1]

Director Hideaki Anno's first post-Evangelion anime, Karekano shows a departure from Gainax's perceived territory of mecha anime. Set in a modern day Japanese school it tells the story of Miyazawa Yukino and Souchirou Arima, students entering the first year of high school.

A romantic comedy it differentiates itself from the competition with genuinely amusing jokes which, I hasten to add, do not involve the leads transforming into cats, pigs, chickens or anything else. The animation style is also quite unlike other modern anime.

Cowboy Bebop [starting Episode 1]

There's only one word which can sum up CB. It's `cool'.

CB follows a group of interplanetary bounty hunters through their adventures tracking wanted criminals across the galaxy. Great episodic long storylines and fabulous animation from Sunrise Studios made this the biggest selling anime of 1998 in Japan.

Fushigi Yuugi [starting Episode 15ish]

Fushigi Yuugi follows a Tokyo schoolgirl, Miaka through the fantasy world she accidently fell into whilst reading in the library. Classic shoujo fantasy anime FY is perhaps unique in the degree to which it can defuse a serious situation with some spontaneous insanity.

OAV's about half way through the first series and interesting undercurrents have developed concerning Miaka's friend Yui and her differing experiences in the fantasy world.

Record of Lodoss War [starting Episode 1]

Although about ten years old, the Record of Lodoss War OAVs remain, in my opinion, the definitive serious anime fantasy series. The knight Parn and his Dungeons & Dragons Basic Edition rulebook companions fight dragons, black knights and other generally unpleasant things in the search for fame, fortune and some kid.

Other anime which we hope to show:

Kodomo no Omocha (episodes 27, 28, rumours of 29-38 soon being available), Cardcaptor Sakura, Meitantei Conan (yay), Aa! Megami-sama, flcl (more Gainax insanity), Anime ai no awaawa (yet more Gainax insanity, if we can get it), The Adolescence of Utena (beautiful but insane, not from Gainax)...

Fandubs, karoake, Japanese meals, you name it...
