canon vs fannon
In every fandom, there is the phenomenon of 'fannon'. In other words, 'facts' about characters which have been repeated so often in so many fics that everyone assumes that they're official, certified truth.
So here they are! Common misconceptions, debunked by yours truly. If you've got any to add, lemme know! I'm starting a collection ^_^
Schuldig has green eyes
This one drives me NUTS. ^_^ I dunno where it comes from - I think it's because he has red hair and dresses in that *sigh* slightly... unflattering... green jacket. Everyone has the subconscious idea that he's a leprechaun.
In any case, anyone who's ever watched the anime carefully will see that anime Schu has lovely bright *blue* eyes. And I can prove it! Look:
So next time you're reading about those 'emerald orbs', you too can clench your teeth and think 'sapphire! SAPPHIRE!' ^_^ *runs off to get some therapy*
(In all fairness and with some detachment from my screaming insanity, some people argue quite reasonably that Schuschu has green eyes at some points in the anime. I can't see it myself, but if anyone can send me a convincing screencap I'll totally retract my comments here)
Schuldig was a prostitute before he was in Schwarz
I think this originated with (or was at least popularised by) Sidara's epic and famous fic 'Sunde', although it appears in so many fics it's hard to tell... in any case, there is absolutely nothing in any canon material that I know of to imply that this is true. Not that it's necessarily unlikely - it's just that I can't imagine that someone quite as manipulative and powerful as our Schuschu would ever have to go through with it. Unless he wanted to. ^_^ And if he did, by god he'd leave some messed up people behind him...
Crawford was a boxer before he was in Schwarz
Again, no evidence in official material about this - but the idea does come from the series. Anyone who's watched Fearless Leader in combat in the anime will have noticed his boxer-style stance and style of fighting, so it isn't implausible.
Schu's real name is 'Christian'
It's all Sidara's fault! Again! ^_^ This comes from her fic Sunde, and has been repeated in lots of other fics. But it's not canon - no official source mentions any name for telepath-boy other than Schuldig. So you can call him whatever you want. ^_^ (To his face? Depends how much you value your life...)
Crawford's full Christian name is 'Bradley'
OK, so this is nitpicking, but I DON'T CARE! Officially all we ever get is 'Brad', which could well be his full name in its own right, but everyone assumes it's short for Bradley. Me? I like Brad, but I'm really not keen on Bradley as a name for a cold-blooded assassin, so I'm including this. :-p
In case anyone's interested, here are some other possible names for which 'Brad' is a recognised short form: Braden, Bradford (Bradford Crawford? O.o), Brady, Bradburn, Bradshaw, Brada, Bradach, Bradain, Bradan, Bradberry, Bradbourne, Bradbury, Braddan, Braddock, Braddon, Braddyn, Bradell, Braderick, Bradman, Bradney, Bradston, Bradway, Bradwell, Bradwick. Spelling alternatives for Bradley include Bradly, Bradlee, Bradlay, Bradlea. So there. ^_^
Farf says '-------- hurts God' all the time
Ohhhhhh no he doesn't! In fact, although it's been a while since I watched the anime in full, I'm not sure if he ever says it at all. The nearest we get to that is in Farf's episode (18); Schu asks Nagi where Farf has gone, to which Nagi replies 'He's gone to give God a hard time again'. Later, Farf tries to win a reaction from God by harming a clergyman, and he turns to the altar and says 'The body of your creation. I'm hurting it.' But quite frankly that's the closest we get. The thing about Farf is, he's quite quiet, and other than when he's fighting the things he says are quite sane. Total raving loony the man may be, but it's not half as obvious in the series as it's often portrayed to be in fics.
Farf licks knives and purees things in a blender a lot
OK, so he licks a knife once - as far as I know just once. There's no implication that it's a hobby. And Farf the blender fiend is a complete fan creation (more's the pity ^_^). There's a shocking blender deficiency in Weiß Kreuz...
Ken has chocolate brown eyes
Blue! Blue blue blue blue blue! Or, officially, blue-green. I swear, the only one anybody ever gets right is Aya's eye colour... Ken must just come across as a brown kind of person. :-p
NB. I am perfectly prepared to admit that Ken's eyes are drawn brown in some of the manga artwork and artbooks. Doesn't mean I can't be pedantic about the series... ^_^
Schuldig has to fight to get Brad to express any feelings for him.
Fanfic gets very clichéd this way. Thing is, there's very little basis for it in the series - Crawford really isn't Mr Spock; in fact, he expresses more casual emotion in the series than either Farf or Nagi, who are generally pretty poker-faced.
Anyways, Kwobt-chan put it much better than I could, so here's her rant in full:
This is just LUDICROUS. First of all, just because Brad may be all-business like during the day, who’s to say he’s not passionate by night? Most of this characterization of Brad as the immovable stone pillar of decorum probably comes from the fact he’s usually given “seme” standing it seems (but, that’s another complaint all together).
The outright logic error here is that Schuldig has not need to pressure Brad into expressing any feelings for him, or go so far as to rudely seduce him in an attempt to win his heart. He’s a telepath, he knows what Brad thinks about him, or should know, but inexplicably doesn’t. What’s more, who decided telepaths are emotionally demanding? Especially those who delight in maddening little Weiss Kitties as part of their day job?
If anything, the most sane progression of things would be Schu stringing Brad’s emotions along instead of the other way around.
