vital statistics

Name: Schuldig [click for a translation]

Codename: Mastermind - heh. Nuff said. ^_^

Age: 22ish

Height: 180cm Does that seem kind of short to anyone else? I got the impression he was taller than that in the anime - OTOH, I also got the impression that he was taller than Crawford (he's a good 10cm shorter) so what do I know...?

Eye colour: Gold (manga), blue (anime) [click for a relevant rant]

Hair colour: Green (manga), red (anime)

Ethnicity: Good question. Schu is Caucasian in appearance, and due to the name he uses it's generally assumed that he's German. This is never officially stated AFAIK, but in the first Schwarz drama CD he does talk about the place very familiarly...
Schu: "So y're saying we shouldn't leave this floating junkheap? Let's just spend all our days drifting along the Rhine... Shit, don't joke with me! Bern never had much in the way of amusement, but I'd rather die if we can't even move about freely in Bavaria." [ From translation by Jey Kama ]
Now maybe that just means he's spent time in Germany, but *I* think he's German, so I'm going to take it as incontrovertible evidence. ^_^
NB. I have been told that it is in fact stated that he's German in the Film Book. (which I haven't got so can't confirm)

Power: Telepathy, possibly unnatural speed of movement. Schuldig appears to move incredibly fast during fights - in his very first fight he effortlessly kicks the combined ass of Aya, Yohji and Ken. ^_^ However, I've never been sure whether this is meant to be a separate ability in its own right, or is just our Schuschu messing with his opponents' heads so they don't see him move. He also jumps off a several-storey building without injury on one occasion, but I figure that's just supposed to be anime gravity in action (it only applies to minor characters ^_^). Or maybe Nagi helped him out...

Seiyuu: Midorikawa Hikaru - the voice behind Heero (Gundam Wing), Tamahome (Fushigi Yuugi), Michael Grant (Marmalade Boy), Mikage (Utena), plus a ton of other roles. Click here for more about him.

Story, and a little analysis: (spoilers!) OK, herewith a very brief rundown of the plot and what we know about Schuschu.

::::::::::[ Before the series ]::::::::::

About his early life: nothing at all. Many fic-writers have tried to give him horrible childhoods of various kinds, but I tend to view that as unnecessary, and it's certainly not hinted at in any official material. Schuldig always seems to me to be remarkably well-adjusted and happy, with the exception of the problem he describes that his telepathy causes, of not being able to tell which thoughts are his and which belong to others. Now OK he kills people, and he obviously doesn't feel at all guilty about it, but that doesn't imply childhood trauma to me. More like full-blown psychopathy, or maybe psychosis of some kind. I'd guess at psychopathy, though my knowledge on the subject is pretty limited.

Schuldig was at Rosenkrüs, the school where SZ trained their agents with supernatural abilities, at the same time as Crawford (we learn this in the Schwarz drama CDs). During this time he had some kind of relationship with a BIG HO called Silvia, as did Crawford, who she claims to have preferred (no taste, some people). At some point later than this Farf was added to the group, and Nagi, who was never at Rosenkrüs, later still.

::::::::::[ The series ]::::::::::

When the series starts, Schwarz (now an established group) have been sent by SZ to act as bodyguards for their pawn Reiji Takatori, and secretly to spy on him and ensure he follows the SZ agenda. They spend the first half of the series doing the bodyguarding job and generally staying in the background. Schu occupies himself playing mind games with Omi and Ouka, runs the occasional errand for Takatori, but doesn't particularly put himself forward.

However, at the midpoint of the series Schwarz (or their masters) decide that Takatori has become a liability, and they promptly abandon him to be killed by Weiss, taking out the guards he sets to watch them with insulting ease on their way out. ^_^ After this point they are clearly acting directly for SZ, furthering the (as yet unknown) masterplan.

At the finale of the series, the masterplan is revealed as being an attempt by the SZ Elders to summon some kind of demon which may or may not have been Hitler/have possessed Hitler during WW2. Schwarz, however, have other plans and sabotage the ceremony with the intention of creating anarchy. Weiss arrive to put a stop to the ceremony, and successfully bump off two of the three Elders, although they need Schwarz to deal with the strongest one. Weiss and Schwarz then get into a huge fight, which ends only when the whole building collapses into the sea, taking all the assassins with it. We end the series with the revelation that Weiss survived, but no word on Schwarz...

::::::::::[ OVAs ]::::::::::

Then cometh the OVAs, which are fairly uninteresting IMO but have more expensive animation THANK GOD. However, in the last twenty seconds of the second one, we get a brief glimpse of Schuschu and Crawford, both very much alive, well and plotting Weiss' downfall. ^_^

::::::::::[ Drama CDs ]::::::::::

The drama CDs pick up some time after this. Schwarz get embroiled with a young woman named Sally Schumars, who Farf falls in love with. SZ is hunting her, so her presence brings them down on Schwarz as well. The boys fight off some old enemies from Rosenkrüs (including Silvia) and escape, but Farf leaves with Sally.

I have a translation of the first drama CD, done by Jey Kama of Aya no Weiss Kreuz Corner. No full translation for the second CD exists as far as I know, but I do have a summary with some translation of what takes place in it, by Tot no Miko and Reiko no Miko. (Note: I've been unable to contact any of the translators for permission as they all appear to have dropped off the Net, so I'm posting these with all due credit and hoping they won't be offended.)

::::::::::[ Glühen ]::::::::::

And then comes Glühen. In between the previous and this, Nagi has also left Schwarz, although he returns to the series to help Weiss. Schu and Crawford are still fighting SZ and their malevolent intentions towards Weiss haven't changed. The end of Gluhen appears to show the terrible two blown up, but we've seen that before. As Schu so eloquently puts it, with powers like theirs they could survive anything. ^_^
(my knowledge of Glühen is somewhat feeble as I haven't seen it all yet. This bit of the summary comes primarily from Arvanah Modray's site.)
